The geological record shows, however, that violent explosive activity predating European contact was extremely common in 1790 one such eruption killed more than 400 people, making it the deadliest volcanic eruption in what is now the United States. Most historical eruptions occurred at the volcano's summit or its eastern rift zone, and were prolonged and effusive in character. Since then, the volcano has erupted repeatedly. Western contact and written history began in 1778, with their first well-documented eruption of Kīlauea in 1823. Native Hawaiian oral history in conjunction with radiocarbon and paleomagnetic dating places the first documentation of a major eruption of Kīlauea around 1410. The oldest exposed lavas date back 2,800 years. ![]() Lavas younger than 1,000 years cover 90 percent of the volcano's surface. The earliest lavas from the volcano date back to its submarine preshield stage, samples having been recovered by remotely operated underwater vehicles from its submerged slopes samples of other flows have been recovered as core samples. Kīlauea's eruptive history has been a long and active one its name means "spewing" or "much spreading" in the Hawaiian language, referring to its frequent outpouring of lava. Two years later, Kīlauea erupted between December 2020 and May 2021 again within Halemaʻumaʻu crater, boiling off a water lake that had been growing for more than a year, and replacing it with a lava lake 229 m (751 ft) deep. This activity prompted a months-long closure of the Kīlauea section of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Concurrent with the activity downrift in lower Puna, the lava lake within Halemaʻumaʻu drained and a series of explosive collapse events occurred at the volcano's summit, with at least one explosion emitting ash 30,000 feet (9,100 m) into the air. The County of Hawaii reported that 716 dwellings were destroyed by lava. Lava also filled Kapoho Bay and extended new land nearly a mile into the sea. The eruption destroyed Hawaii's largest natural freshwater lake, covered substantial portions of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens, and completely inundated the communities of Kapoho, nearby Vacationland Hawaii and most of the Kapoho Beach Lots. ![]() Kīlauea also erupted nearly continuously from vents on its eastern rift zone between January 1983 and April 2018, causing considerable property damage, including the destruction of the towns of Kalapana and Kaimū along with the community's renowned black sand beach, in 1990.īeginning in May 2018, activity shifted further downrift from the summit to the lower Puna district, during which lava erupted from two dozen vents with vigorous eruptive fountains that sent destructive rivers of molten rock into the ocean in three places. Structurally, Kīlauea has a large, fairly recently formed caldera at its summit and two active rift zones, one extending 125 km (78 mi) east and the other 35 km (22 mi) west, as an active fault of unknown depth moving vertically an average of 2 to 20 mm (0.1 to 0.8 in) per year.īetween 20, the pit crater Halemaʻumaʻu hosted an active lava lake. Because it lacks topographic prominence and its activities historically coincided with those of Mauna Loa, Kīlauea was once thought to be a satellite of its much larger neighbor. Kīlauea is the second-youngest product of the Hawaiian hotspot and the current eruptive center of the Hawaiian–Emperor seamount chain. Halema'uma'u has been the sole eruptive area of Kīlauea since December 2020 with intermittent lava effusion from then to March 7, 2023, followed by a 90-day pause. ![]() Kīlauea is also one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, with the most recent eruption occurring on September 10th, 2023 after a series of earthquakes, when multiple vents erupted lava within Halemaʻumaʻu, a pit crater in the volcano's summit caldera, and building a fissure cinder cone approximately 40 m (130 ft) high. Historically, it is the most active of the five volcanoes that together form the island of Hawaii. Located along the southeastern shore of Hawai'i Island, the volcano is between 210,000 and 280,000 years old and emerged above sea level about 100,000 years ago. Kīlauea ( US: / ˌ k ɪ l ə ˈ w eɪ ə/ KIL-ə- WAY-ə, Hawaiian: ) is an active shield volcano in the Hawaiian Islands.

While sitting or bending to lift, internal pressure on a disc can move from 1.2 bar (17 psi) (lying down) to over 21 bar (300 psi) (lifting with a rounded back). When the spine is straight, such as in standing or lying down, internal pressure is equalized on all parts of the discs. ![]() ![]() Other complications include chronic pain. This disorder is called cauda equina syndrome. Compression of the cauda equina can cause permanent nerve damage or paralysis which can result in loss of bowel and bladder control and sexual dysfunction. Typically, symptoms are experienced only on one side of the body, but if a herniation is very large and presses on the nerves on both sides within the spinal column or the cauda equina, both sides of the body may be affected, often with serious consequences. Ī herniated disc in the lumbar spine may cause radiating nerve pain in the lower extremities or groin area and may sometimes be associated with bowel or bladder incontinence. A small-sample study examining the cervical spine in symptom-free volunteers found focal disc protrusions in 50% of participants, suggesting that a considerable part of the population might have focal herniated discs in their cervical region that do not cause noticeable symptoms. It is possible to have a herniated disc without pain or noticeable symptoms if the extruded nucleus pulposus material doesn't press on soft tissues or nerves. Unlike a pulsating pain or pain that comes and goes, which can be caused by muscle spasm, pain from a herniated disc is usually continuous or at least continuous in a specific position of the body. If the herniated disc is in the lumbar region, the patient may also experience sciatica due to irritation of one of the nerve roots of the sciatic nerve. Symptoms may include sensory changes such as numbness, tingling, paresthesia, and motor changes such as muscular weakness, paralysis, and affection of reflexes. ![]() Often, herniated discs are not diagnosed immediately, as patients present with undefined pains in the thighs, knees, or feet. They can range from little or no pain, if the disc is the only tissue injured, to severe and unrelenting neck pain or low back pain that radiates into regions served by nerve roots which have been irritated or impinged by the herniated material. Symptoms of a herniated disc can vary depending on the location of the herniation and the types of soft tissue involved. Typically, symptoms are experienced on one side of the body only. The condition may be referred to as a slipped disc, but this term is not accurate as the spinal discs are firmly attached between the vertebrae and cannot "slip" out of place. Severe herniations may not heal of their own accord and may require surgery. Anti-inflammatory treatments for pain associated with disc herniation, protrusion, bulge, or disc tear are generally effective. Most minor herniations heal within several weeks. In contrast to a herniation, none of the central portion escapes beyond the outer layers. A tear in the disc ring may result in the release of chemicals causing inflammation, which can result in severe pain even in the absence of nerve root compression.ĭisc herniation is normally a further development of a previously existing disc protrusion, in which the outermost layers of the annulus fibrosus are still intact, but can bulge when the disc is under pressure. Tears are almost always posterolateral (on the back sides) owing to relative narrowness of the posterior longitudinal ligament relative to the anterior longitudinal ligament. When a tear in the outer, fibrous ring of an intervertebral disc allows the soft, central portion to bulge out beyond the damaged outer rings, the disc is said to be herniated.ĭisc herniation is frequently associated with age-related degeneration of the outer ring, known as the annulus fibrosus, but is normally triggered by trauma or straining by lifting or twisting. Protection from disc herniation is best provided by core strength and an awareness of body mechanics including posture. The most conclusive diagnostic tool for disc herniation is MRI, and treatment may range from painkillers to surgery. It may result in back pain, pain or sensation in different parts of the body, and physical disability. Slipped disc, bulging disc, ruptured disc, herniated disc, prolapsed disc, herniated nucleus pulposus, lumbar Disc HerniationĪ spinal disc herniation is an injury to the cushioning and connective tissue between vertebrae, usually caused by excessive strain or trauma to the spine. I used to go to the Chinatown in Los Angeles near Dodger Stadium. I always remember how cool it was from a young age to go to dim sum. At Palette, it’s always the lobster dumplings. At Yank Sing, I have to get the duck and XO green beans. “ Yank Sing seems to have a more delicate dough than most places around, while Palette Tea House has a really fun, creative side. Who makes the placement decisions regarding student placement in gifted programming in CISD? Using the same numbers as the last example, if 10% of the normalization population got all the questions correct, and your child got only one question incorrect, her score would appear as something less than 90th percentile! For this reason, it is always important to ask to see the raw score when the percentile score doesn’t seem to make sense for the child. This creates a conundrum – one or a few questions wrong, can terribly skew the percentile scores. If 10 percent of the students in the normalization study got all the questions correct, then they would have each earned the 90th percentile. This makes percentile scores for the top-scoring students seem odd. But on many tests, especially grade-level achievement tests, the tests are designed so that many students know most or all of the material. Gifted students often score in the 96th or 99th percentile on achievement testing. ![]() If the test is properly normed, 50% of the students will score below the 50th percentile. Why are the tests used in screening for GT timed? Observed performance is examined very closely and carefully through the perspective of the person or persons providing the information. It all boils down to how giftedness is being defined and how it is being observed. Or my favorite: gifted families that think everybody operates the same way that they do – so they can’t possibly be gifted. They see only their own children, or this is their first or only child, or this child is just like the cousins. Many gifted parents don’t have the perspective of seeing a variety of children who are the same age as their child. Some cultures do not value certain characteristics of giftedness and view them negatively and a result they are often reluctant to report those characteristics or the degree to which they are expressed. Many gifted parents have a different perspective of giftedness than teachers of the gifted have. You’d think that parent surveys would be the most accurate measure of a child, but they often aren’t. The teacher must compare the student being observed with a student of AVERAGE ability for that grade level and content area in order for the ratings to be accurate. The value of the results depends on the gifted training level of the teacher completing the survey. Tests such as the GATES and the TPOI are actually surveys, where the teachers subjectively record their opinions about the child’s performance using a rating scale. The TPOI (Talent Pool Observation Inventory) is used in grades K-2. We use a parent survey for Grades K-4 and the GATES (Gifted and Talented Evaluation Scale) for grades 3-12. How does the RIST, OLSAT, NNAT, and the CogAT differ? The person supervising and training those who use the RIST must have successfully completed advanced assessment training. CISD requires RIST administrators to not only go through the initial training, but also complete a refresher course each year to avoid examiner drift. The RIST must be given by a highly trained professional. These data suggest that the reliability for the RIST is adequate to serve as either a first or second screening gate and is comparable to that of intelligence tests of far greater length. 84 respectively, were obtained for the RIST composite. Furthermore, uncorrected and corrected stability coefficients of. The RIST composite yielded a median standard error of measurement of 3.35 and a median internal consistency coefficient of. CISD uses the RIST or Reynolds Intellectual Screening Test when discrepancies arise in individual cases. Individual ability tests are considered the most accurate measure of intelligence, but even they are not perfect. These tests can be administered by any member of our professional staff that has been trained specifically for ability screening. OLSAT, CogAT, and NNAT are examples of group ability tests that are used in Conroe. Group ability tests are commonly used in situations of large numbers. We use group and individual ability tests in CISD. ![]() Browse our selection of White Mounting Brackets Window Treatment Accessories to find great choices like the Curtain Rings With Clips or the 1 1/2" Metal Curtain Rings With Eyelets, and so many other well-loved brands!
